For 1932 the quality of this black and white film is excellent and very clear. The story line is consistent and the acting, very professional. I can't believe I am enjoying a 88 year old movie. Thumbs up.
What's great about this film is precisely what is often cited as a drawback, and that is how old-fashioned it is, which it already seemed to be in 1932. Yet, that almost Victorian-like, melodramatic tone works perfectly here, making it play out as an eerie fairy tale about the ancient practice of voodooism. As such, nobody but Bela Lugosi could bring to the character of the zombie master the larger than life intensity the role required.
I had tried watching this one before, but every video upload I could find was so grainy and/or pixellated it was unwatchable. Thank you so much for uploading a decent version!
Thank you for posting this! There are so many little touches left over from silent movies, probably since it looks like it's 90% filmed on theater stages. These touches add subtleties that modern films can't be bothered with - probably Hitchcock carried them further into the sound era than most directors. This movie has much to offer - thanks again!
First saw this film in late 90's. Came across it at a thrift store and bought it. This is a really good film. I love Bela Lugosi as Dracula and he's great in this one as well.
heavy on the atmosphere this budget horror is pretty good. Saw it in a revival theater maybe 50 years ago and the B&W print is really quite beautiful on a big screen.
Wow the clarity of this treasure is astounding. Is this a lost studio copy or has it been remastered like a lot of the classic films have been? Thanks for sharing and uploading. I wish they still made em like this.
My favorite zombie movie ever, my opinion, even the newer movies after this are nothing and useless, except night of the living dead (1968). This is real cult classic and, one best is in this is, this is very old, one bests Bela Lugosi's films. I dare say, this is best zombie movie what is ever made in a whole world history, idea is genius

This is how long the Jews (saturnists) have been working on Fentanyl. The wood of the Holly tree (Hollywood) was used to make their wands. Their movies are predictive programming and the ones who call you a tin foil hat wearing conspiracy theorist are under their spell.
great first zombie movie, it´s all about love. Joyful pure love which beats the dark voodoo spirits. It's a great suspenseful horror movie but all in all it is really romantic and emphasises that real love is much stronger than any dark magic spell. I can´t put into words how much I appreciated this masterpiece. For my opinion 10/10. Great casting choice, Lugosi is perfect in this. And the ending asking for a match really brings a bit humour to it which rounds up this awesome blissful star of film history. This is true art

Apperantly it happened for real as well. If you belive that you are a zombie because that is what your culture tells you then you can be exploited as a slave. It is a sort of culturally specific psychosis.
The vial was probably filled with scopolomine, which has been used in other countries to put people to sleep and as a suggestive drug. This is where the zombie legend comes from!
In short, this is basically a Universal horror movie that wasn’t made by Universal. The Halprrin Brothers hired a ton of behind the scenes Universal people (including makeup legend Jack Pierce) filmed mostly on the Universal backlot and unused studios on the property and in very little time turned out a minor gem. Yes the acting is a bit over the top at times and it lacks a bit of the polish that the best Universal films had, but some of it rates right up there with Dracula, Frankenstein and the other classics. At times it’s kind of silly, but it’s definitely worth the effort of watching it. Before it was restored, it was a chore to watch, and the poor quality of the unrestored prints sometimes made it downright funny. Not the case since restoration…

I know this is a classic and where it all started, but how in the hell is this Rob Zombie’s favorite film so much so that’s how he named his band one of the hardest metal bands from the 20th century 🤨???
I wonder what, exactly, Legendre (Lugosi) whispered into Beaumont's ear at around the 17:40 mark? Beaumont responded with a rather terrified reply, "No!... Not THAT!" So, does anybody have an idea of what "that" was??
These zombies are truer to the zombie legend than the flesh eating ghouls of today who aren't really zombies. That foolishness started with Night of the Living Dead. I like the over dramatic acting. Makes it interesting. "It is I, Neal." Proper grammar.
Actually thease modern "zombies" should be called something else, there are probably some folk lore creature that they are similar enough to borrow their name from.
@@michaelpettersson4919 About the modern “zombies” so to speak. George Romero (creator of the Dead series) himself said that he doesn’t consider his monsters (flesh-eating undead) as zombies (cause this name was given to them by the fans), while in his definition zombies are those creatures from this movie (White Zombie).

90 years
For 1932 this movie actually was bad and thats what people thought back then just like watching a crappy horror movie of today.
Heavy use of Digital Noise Reduction. I have a DVD version and the print is in a bad way.
Now its 91 years old and is one of my favorite zombie movies. No blood, guts, and flesh eating. Just spells and hypnosis.
I’m so happy they remastered this classic.

This movie is one of my all time favorites. Lugosi at his best. His acting, and of course his creepy stare. Truly iconic!
And his handlebar eyebrows

He's incredible in this role!
best print ive seen. great film. watch it every fall.
Excellent print! The other prints I've seen weren't of good quality, but this copy is great. Very atmospheric, really well done.
What a brilliant print of a film that is 90 years old. Congratulations, CCC.

This is the greatest Bela Lugosi zombie movie ever🧟🎥👏👏👏
Excellent quality to this print, which is saying something for a film nearly 100 years old.
Thanks for this classic movie, the image is very clean and the black&white is almost hypnotical.!!!
Bela Lugosi is a Legend!

This movie was lost for a couple of decades before it was restored. It literally came back from the dead!
The scene where Bela Lugosi appears in the lady's glass is godlike
Dang it! It ended on a cliffhanger. Guess we’ll never know if he had a match.
Theres actually a sequel
what is the sequel name?@@ZAVB3R3R
More like an over the cliff hanger
One of my favorite zombie movies. They need to make more zombie movies like this again.
this type of zombie movies it's the only enjoyable ones, no gore, no blood and a make up is good too.
Masterpiece! Thank you so much for uploading this beautiful print. + so many different Closed Caption choices ❤️

What a beautiful movie 👏👏👏
Knowing that zombies were just people drugged up and made into slaves makes this heartbreaking.

Not that different then fentanyl these days sadly
Without this movie rob zombie would probably be going by the name, Rob Caligari from the band, The cabaret of Dr.Caligari.

The way Murder Legendre was screaming when he was thrown off the cliff and the doll landing on the rocks was hilarious. Great movie 👍👍

Como sempre foi , Bela Lugosi extremamente exagerado em suas interpretações , mas mesmo assim., um grande ator do gênero de filmes de terror .
Definitely a pre-Hays Code film

Awesome HD quality! Thanks! Gives me a reason to watch it again after all the crap public domain dubs I've watched.
Why do all the horror movies from this decade (30s) always end with jokes ?
I don't know but maybe they thought people in those Depression-era days needed something positive, instead of all drama and negative.
